Get experience first? Or, hunt dangerous game right away?
Two schools of thought. I’ve got my opinion, but I’m very interested in reading others perspectives.
.404J - Got mine back from Dennis Olson after 3 YEARS
Back in January 2021 I sent a BRNO 602 in .375H&H to Dan Pederson to be converted to .404J; here is the full article I wrote about that experience....
So after two years, Dan returns this to me....

I wanted the rifle completed by someone with the skills and experience to get it done right, so I asked several forum members and Dennis Olson's name...

9.3x74R for eland - which bullet?
My 9.3x74r double rifle regulates very well with 200 grain cutting edge raptors and 325 grain Norma oryx bullets. So much for double rifles needing to shoot about the same speed to regulate. My next African adventure will have tracking eland at the top of the list. Which bullet would you choose?
Who else got busted by the "point creep" ?
To make a long story short, along with 2 friends, we had booked an antelope hunt in Wyoming for October 2026. At the time of drawing, we got busted!
In 2025, with 3,3 points in average for our group, we would have been 100% sure to draw tags. In 2026, it took 5 points for 100%. Outfitter said he missed 15 antelope hunters next fall because of the point creep. Versus 2025, our unit needed 2 more points to draw a tag, that was unheard of according to the Outfitter.
Anyone else got busted?

Based on my research I believe the rifle was built prior to the mid to late 1940's before Jeffery converted to modern ammo. Further research warns of the extreme pressure from modern ammo compared to the old cordite ammo being used in older rifles. The seller told me that the previous owner used Hornady and the current owner said he has fired two boxes of Hornady ammo...
